Went out to the shed,
checked all balls, you are right. They are not two inches any
more.

Haven't been for about 20 years, though the difference is not
obvious to the naked eye between the new size 50mm and the old 50.8mm
(2").
To make it easier, 50 mm balls have a flat machined on the top,
about 12 mm across - so if your towball has a flat top it is 50
mill. These will fit - loosely and less securely - in a 2" hitch so
make sure you have a good safety chain if you do this. A 2" ball is
"very" snug in a 50mm hitch, but there are still 2 serious risks: (a)
it will not in fact be properly on and may come off, or (b) it will be
much harder to get off when you have gravity working against you.
As
for electrical connectors for lighting etc wires, they are all made by
Utilux (or Repco-style copies) but the flat plastic one about 50 mm x 10
mm with the centre pin raised above the line of the others is the
Australian Design rules standard that will be fitted to a new vehicle by
default. They seem to last about 5 years unless you drive with the trailer
plug not properly in the socket (or run over something that rips it out),
or you drop the rear of the car onto a bank or gutter. The metal ones were
more robust, but just as prone to scuff on the road if they fell out, and
there were 4 or 5 different types and sizes and several adaptors formed
part of a well-prepared pilot's kit. Non-standard wiring - or different
standards in different States - was a perennial problem.
I must be
getting old - I haven't had 2" balls for years!
