Where can i get a copy of ozFLARM to have a play with in importing SWER data into it ?

Is it a free download or a $1000 dollar package that you have to purchase ?

Does any one know if it will work on my HP iPAQrz1710 .... need to find a cradle too

regards

Ben

I have done some work with the FLARM people in Switzerland on their
obstacle databases; yes they do mark these types of wires.

I also am of the opinion that it is unrealistic to expect we can get all
SWER ones in there, but key ones particularly in mountain regions where
we fly closer to terrain is certainly a useful thing.

If anyone has the stamina to go about hunting a source for the data, I
am happy to help process the database for use in OzFLARM. Basically we
just need lists of lat-lon and height of the obstacle relative to the
terrain. (For wires this is done with polylines i.e. points in the same
way.)

Although putting all SWER lines would probably not be practicle.

A small list of key ones would be good ie. The one at Coryong that
runs between 2 hills. The SWER line from the top too the bottom of Ben
Nevis (1500ft) in Vic. There must be a few more that fit into this
broad category.

Nothing can replace a good look out and situational awareness. Any
additional information in any form could not hurt.

I believe they use FLARM in Europe to mark these types of wires.

Once you hit the first pole on your own property, the wire and
poles to your house are yours.

You are required to maintain them.

Only in rare instances is there private ownership of poles and wires
in SA (and other states are similar I believe since all the state
governments tended to plagiarise off each other when they wrote their
respective legislations).

Of course you still need an authorised electrician to do it -
just like you do wiring in your own house.

For this reason, companies will only keep the data to that
first pole, as they could move on your house - and it is not
their responsibility - just like they don't keep any data to
what power points you have in your house.

Of course there are SWER lines that are not private, but not
many, most use 3 wire systems (same principle, but all 3
        phases and easier to see).

There are _no_ private SWER lines in SA. The utility owns the SWER
line up to the transformer pole at the house, the transformer, the LV
feed into the house and the meter.

(There are tens of thousands of kilometres of SWER in SA)
