Moreso as I have found myself lately involved in designing lightning protection in electrical switchyards. > > I am sure that many subscribers on this list have their own > lightning/Cb related story. I remember a couple of years ago, on final glide to Gawler in the rain amongst the lightning in my Boomerang. So much rain that it was coming in the canopy and soaking me. But the _best_ lightning show I saw was at Vinon last year. It tended to get very humid there with afternoon thunderstorms every day. Andrew Wright and myself were standing at the tie down area as gliders were being derigged. It was the last competition day, which had just been cancelled due to the approaching, forecast, storm. The rush of derigging had been nearly finished and most people had disappeared from the field although there were a few stragglers still about. The lightning was flashing down around us, but there was no rain and the air was dead calm. It just so happened that Andrew and I were both facing in the same direction and we both saw the full flash as a lightning stroke hit a lone tree on the airfield about 4-500 metres away. A ball of white smoke exactly the same size as the tree foliage separated from the tree and drifted away in the still air. The ball of smoke hung together for many secondsa and it was quite a long time before the smoke ball dissipated completely.
