I reckon he did try to turn, but anyways, that doesn't matter. Ever since I've been on a gliding field, my old man has been drilling into me - MUST have flying speed after a cable break. (you all know this, I didn't really need to say it again - just had to finish the sentance somehow!). I often speed up to 70kts, so as to be 'sure to be sure'..
This was cemented to me when I saw Dad go up on the wire, had a cable break going right onto full rotation (so whats that, 50-100'?). Dad reacted brilliantly, drove the four at the deck instantly. Just before arriving at the ground, pulling up and made a landing like any other. Other good points to that cable break, was that Dad didn't try to turn, even though he was going to be landing into badly coiled wire infront of him. This resulted in a scratched canopy and ripped off door hinges. Much better than a written off glider and well... My winch experience saved me during a tow one day also. The tow-pilot got airborne early, and proceeded to climb - even while I couldn't. I litterally was being dragged into the air. All the calls of 10kts faster were no good. I was full back-stick, and the tuggie at full power and full forward stick. I was in a position where I couldn't release, was better off (I thought under the circumstances that I saw) to hang on. At about 300', the perfect oppertunity came along. The nose bunted up to about 30-45*, it was at that point I pulled the bung. Full forward stick, drove it hard down to get flying speed, THEN made the 180* turn and landed safely back towards launch point. Glad I had my experience there, otherwise could've been much worse!
