Divide the cost of development by the number of sales...
For the glider market, this is a big number.

Not really, no.  Talking about the variometers, they are generally less
sensitive (slower response, poor resolution) than required in a glider.
Not that it is impossible, but if you took a commodity pg/hg vario into
your glider I doubt you'd be impressed by its performance.

But these instruments also don't do everything that is required in a
glider --- AAT tasks, airspace management, etc.

They're not fit for purpose.  To make them so, they'd need to spend X
hours at $$ per hour doing so.

Even the casing design is not appropriate for use in a glider --- can't
fit a flytec gizmo in a 57mm instrument hole!  Nor would you want to run
it off a couple of AA cells..  And you want to plug it into a speaker,
so you need it to have an onboard amplifier...

So you see, they're different not just because of market size, but
because of different use.
