I'm surprise it took that long for someone to mention the scenario of airbrakes failing. I'm all for learning sideslips, and still use them sometimes, after during my training my instructor held the airbrakes closed to see what I would do, and then taught me how to land with no airbrakes. I wouldn't like to try and land with no airbrakes while not having an idea how to do a proper sideslip.
