HI all,
There is no cable available for converting a USB to seral port.
Yes, mostly correct. You can actually get a converter (not a cable)
but it is unlikely to have drivers for the PDA/PNA.
However, the reason people often think this is the case, is that it
uses the same cable connector on the PDA/PNA with a built in serial
port.
Unfortunately most new PDAs and almost all PNAs do NOT have a serial
port internally.
The commonly avalable usb-serial adaptors will not work with these
sort of PDA/PNA, as the 312/312/314 is a USB client NOT a host.
I have seen a post on the XCSoar group that this has been done but I
cant find the post relating to doing so, maybe Johnny W can remember.
Another option moght be a serial to bluetooth adaptor to send the
FLARM data to the PDA.
This really leaves you with the option above. However, even that is
not ideal, as most PNAs do not have the bluetooth stack.
A PNA works great with XCSoar or similar, but really you want to be
using the built in GPS - once you start wanting to connect to a FLARM,
and shelling out the expense of a Bluetooth -> serial adapter, you may
as well buy a slightly more expensive PDA with serial port - and thus
actually save money.
That said, I am putting XCSoar on my PNA to allow me to take XCSoar
into Club Gliders - all stand alone.
