When we used the SPOT at Benalla during the Multi Class Nationals we found
if they weren't mounted flat they did not work reliably. If, for example you
clipped the SPOT onto your parachute harness, effectively mounting it
vertically, then the result was very unreliable.  It wouldn't "see" the
satellite and didn't get the signal out and so there was no position report.

  From what I gather, the cost of the spot tracker relates to the
Iridium-based tracker systems like the Ka-6 relates to the cost of an
AS-G29. One would hope the latter in each case has some added benefit.
  My spot tracker lost the last few position reports one day and appeared on
the website that I did not land where I had launched. Since then I have
always sent an OK message from the landing field. For some obscure reason
that has always gone through.
