Even worse is the threat that the owners won't be able to fly the gliders unless someone pays the fees for the type certificate. What a great way to sow FUD in the minds of potential owners of gliders from smaller companies, let alone take older gliders out of service.

I think EASA has gone past the stage of hammering nails in gliding's coffin. They're throwing the dirt on it in the grave.
