The possible drawback with some ideas, including the "digitised" WAC charts is that the base resolution is not very high. When you change the scale of view, or print size, you may get fuzzy or pixelated type or it may be too small to see.
The Maptrax WAC charts appear to be just scanned charts and I would imagine that some other offerings are the same. The MapConnect charts don't appear to be scanned, but generated from some vector data. The trick is to get the scale correct. That can give you quite a high-res pdf file which then has to be calibrated to add waypoints in the right place. The MapTrax files contained this calibration so waypoints are added in the right spot. The Geoservices site does seem to suggest that the geoMAP 250K (2009) 1:250 000 scale topographic maps in geo-reference PDF format might be OK since you can generate the right resolution PDF files for yourself unlike the NATMAP (2008) files which appear to be scanned. Interesting, but not quite there yet. One good find though is the Geoservices/MapConnect website. This does offer some excellent maps for free. With Government increasingly charging for what taxpayers have already paid for, it's somewhat unusual. Better download everything before they realise!
