I ponied up the big money ($99) and got the Geomap DVD 250K (2009). This consists of about a million maps in PDF form of Australia and outlying islands to the south which are proper vector based maps. That is, it doesn't matter how much you zoom in, the detail still remains sharp.
There's quite a neat tool which allows you to click on a list of place names and it opens the relevant map. OK on an iPad then… if I had one. Good value for money, but I will need to stitch some of the charts together to get my own route maps.
