SSA News: Changes to Flight Recorder Approvals

April 13, 2012
By <http://soaringcafe.com/author/editor/>Editorial Staff

From the <http://www.ssa.org>SSA Website: “Changes to the following flight recorder approvals were approved by the IGC Bureau in October, 2011. GFAC recently agreed to delay the implementation date until October 1, 2012.

“The changes were recommended due to significant breaches of IGC files and the following flight recorders were determined by FAI to not be secure enough for world records. The FRs with reduced approval to Diamond will no longer be valid for Diploma or world record flights. [The SSA's FAI Badge and Record Committee] still needs to determine whether they will be usable for national (U.S.) and state records. The FRs that show approval withdrawn will not be valid for any FAI badge or record.”

Of course this has significant implications for anyone even considering manufacturing "approved"(for now) Flight Recorders. Trying to remove the O.O. from the process always was going to lead to trouble. In this and in other things at least I can say "I told you so".
