The idea that because the Luftwaffe got kids interested in aviation
by giving them primary gliders first and subsequently turning out
many good pilots and therefore that is how it is best to teach people
to fly is probably the most damaging meme to infect sporting soaring ever.
Paticularly nowadays with lots of nice small light aircraft like
Technams, Jabs etc. where you can far more easily generate flying
hours and takeoffs and landings.
Lots of Luftwaffe pilots never went near a glider in formal flying training.

Seems the glider training was introduced after 1943 to give the boys
something to do in initial training and they weren't much good due to
lack of experience.
So yes, in the end they did lose because of the poor quality of their
pilots, amongst lots of other reasons.
