I've installed an LX8000 system in my new glider. (Watch for my article about the first flight in the next Gliding International.)
My reasons for installing it were: (1) total weight less than the equivalent vario+display+flarm+logger (2) total cost less than buying all of those separate devices and (3) I can't buy a new Cambridge 302. I've also got a lot of hours flying and fixing LX8000s in other people's gliders but that wasn't a big factor for me. One advantage of the 'modern' vario over the Cambridge is the additional numbers displayed on the vario are configurable - if you want to see altitude while climbing and true airspeed while cruising, then you can do it. As to the actual performance of the vario, gust filtering etc, all I can say is that it's good enough. I have not noticed any problems or improvements over the 302. The final advantage of the LX8000 screen installed in the panel is that I can't leave it at home like an Oudie. (I'm still working on not leaving the battery at home.) - Morgan -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Richard Frawley Sent: Thursday, 22 May 2014 5:11 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [Aus-soaring] New Generation Vario All, I am seeking contact with anyone who has recent experience with the any of the latest generation of Vario (Butterfly, LX7, etc etc). They do seem to full of many features that I will never use (apart from the noise and the wiggly bit, I really only used a couple of things (wind and final glide as a backup) on the 302 I was using in the Mozzie) as I find the Oudie more than adequate for 'Compute' tasks. Do the new devices add any value in things like gust rejection or wind accuracy or anything that you find of personal value. Am looking to possibly replace some older kit in an LS8 I am acquiring.
