Digital altimeters have a lot going for them apart from accuracy. On
LX instruments, you can get a display of both QNH and height above the
local terrain. This is derived from the FLARM terrain map I believe
but it is accurate enough for the purpose…

When flying over high ground, it is a useful check as to how little
height you may have before deciding to stop trying to stay up and
start landing.

And when landing at a remote aerodrome after a long flight when your
brain is not perhaps working as well as it might, the ability to
confirm your visual impression of the strip while in the circuit and
know that you are at the right height is a great help.
