As is usually the case, the discussion here has side-tracked well away from the 
point...  
I couldn't agree more - if we want to turn students into keen cc pilots, we 
need to take them on an xc flight early in the their training, before they're 
bored to death with circuits.
It doesn't need to be a top class 2 seater or 500 klm. The point is to give 
them a taste of xc & keep them interested.
We should be doing this as part of the training regime.

Or a lighter glider which did not need a small army of helpers to get

it back to the club. And a decent GPS which would find its way back to

the club without getting lost.



The end product of this is that the student pilot on board ends up

paying more for beer and munga than for the tow and tuition! No wonder

paragliders are so popular.
