Hi Jean,
It doesn't matter what book.
I'm not sure what it is you are referring to as "Writer's indexing
tools? If it is dedicated indexing software, then yes.
What Jean probably meant was if you know how to create an Alphabetic
Index in a Writer document (right Jean?)
If you are not, you can start with reading and trying out chapter 12 of
the Writer Guide, it's fun :-)
Nino is correct. Insert > Indexes and Tables > Entry. Chapter 12 of
the Writer Guide has details. You can probably tell us how to improve
that chapter, too. :-)
I realise that professional indexers who are accustomed to using other
software may find Writer's tools a bit cumbersome, but using them
means that anyone can maintain the index and it can be rebuilt quickly
and easily whenever parts of the chapter or book are updated.
Please start with the Calc Guide. We are in the final stages of
editing and review of this book, so the chapters should be stable
enough for indexing. (Our hectic publishing schedule does not allow
the luxury of indexing after the book is otherwise finished; it must
be done concurrently with editing.)
Most of the Calc Guide chapters have few if any index entries in them.
The plan is to publish the first edition by the end of April, and it
needs at least a first-cut index. Further improvements to the index,
like the rest of the book, can be made later.
See the Review List for chapters that have not been checked out by
someone else for editing. I'll be turning around those coming in from
copyeditors as soon as possible and returning them to the Review List,
where you can get them.
