Can we put some sort of reference to OOo Authors in the bottom... Maybe the

How's this?

This is based on Jean's edit. I just added the OOoAuthors graphic. That, and moved the vertical bar a litle bit to the left.
Visually, I think both versions look good. I can go with either. But Peter's idea adds some recognition, without taking away from the document. For that reason, I think I would go for this one.
My opinion, the graphics are not balanced Daniel. Everyone likes this so go with it.
Although I like Daniel's latest iteration (with the OOoAuthors logo), I'm not completely happy with it -- though I'm not quite sure why. Perhaps, as Linda said, it's that the graphics are not balanced. I think she's right, but I can't decide whether that's a problem. Because I have no specific objections, I also have no specific suggestions.
I really hope that Linda might be able to find some time this week to offer another version of her own. I'm a bit uneasy that our best graphic designer doesn't like a design that the rest of us amateurs are about to adopt.
I'd also like to hear from some other people, if anyone else has an opinion. Although everyone who has commented so far (including me) says they like Daniel's version, we're heard from only a few people.
I'm not worried about filling up empty space on the page. White space is a perfectly valid design element. I agree with what Jean said in a separate message, that it makes more sense to put the OOoAuthors logo on the book inside title page than on the chapter title page.
However, because the chapters are distributed separately, it might be a good idea to indicate that the chapter is part of a larger document. For example, "Chapter N of OpenOffice.org XXX Guide". We don't otherwise indicate that, currently.
Of the proposed cover pages that have been posted, I like Linda's original, and also Peter's version with the title inside the horizontal gray bar. I'm less keen on Daniel's version with the narrow gray bars; not sure why (it looks a bit like unfestive ribbon on a package). I'd love to see another iteration from Linda if she has time.
