I didn't mean to offend you...but just to point out to everyone that there is still alot of work to do in CREATING the documents. Calc is not as easy a project as writing the guides for the other components...topics such as Macros, formulas, managing multiple worksheets (spreadsheets, or whatever), data sources and functions will take a good deal of energy.
Agreed.
No offense taken. I was just still a little touchy after some comments made in another list about OOoAuthors output. Sorry I jumped the gun. :(
I have noticed that out membership has seemed to stagnate since you and Iain joined. Maybe I am missing some, but more life blood would be nice. Have we considered just weekly posting a help wanted notice on the users list?
And the Base guide is not any easier. Both of these components are valuable to users who are considering switching from M$ Office, if they can't find good documentation they will probably not make the change. A viable and well documented word processor alone is not a reason to dump Office. My take on the posts here is "thank goodness the Writer chapter is done" now we can relax".
While that may be true. I think the part of Office that people use the most is probably Word. Followed by Calc, then Impress, then Access (ignoring Outlook because it is irrelevant to OOo.) However, I do not know that people are really taking a breather, maybe.
...I am working on an outline for the Functions and Formulas chapter to submit so I won't write anything that is considered unnecessary. But I also have 3 other documents in the cooker...I wrote the Functions appendix first as a lead in to the Functions and Formulas chapter, so I would be up-to-date on any new features. This chapter will take me several weeks to complete...but first I need to have the others well under way...I still need to look over the latest "What is OOo? version.
After I sent my e-mail I realize that it may have sounded like I was saying you needed more, sorry.
I would be interested in seeing your outline when it is done. I have flipped flopped back and forth in my head about how that chapter should be handled. My current thought is that it shouldn't be that long given than we have the function database for Appendix C. A good explanation of a vlookup would be nice because that is wicked awesome tool I only recently learned how to use.
I, for one, remember looking over the previous version 1.x guides for help, and finding them seriously lacking in substance (as do others check out the OOoforums). Sorry for my enthusiasm, although it seems that I am hard (and at times abrasive) on others, I am hardest on myself.
I think a lot of them were written in haste just to get done before 2.0 and then we would build on that base for 2.0. I do not ever go to the forums, but if anyone thinks something in particular is lacking, encourage them to add it to the dock and then post it. Many hands make light work. :)
So you can basically forget I wrote anything...it's always just my opinion. Have fun tonight...
I will not forget. :) Discourse is good. I am going to a hockey game, so I am not sure how much fun I will have. However, I did just take my cat to get shots and it went fabuoulsy well.
Have a good one, -- Peter Kupfer OOo user since 'OO4 http://peschtra.tripod.com/open_office/ooo_front.htm
