[authors] PING Rick and Daniel: What is OOo?

I have taken Rick's latest version of this file (incorporating edits by 
Daniel and Janet) and have made some minor copyedits and added some 
material. Three notes from Daniel remaining in the file point to items that 
need to be checked or rewritten. Otherwise I think this chapter is finally 
ready for pre-release publishing.
