So do we select a check box or check a select box?
It's "select a checkbox" -- but usually you can avoid the word "checkbox" by just using the label (word or phrase) that appears next to the checkbox. For example, in OOo 1.1.4, you might write:
"To turn on the Help Agent, go to the Tools > Options > General dialog. In the Help Agent section, select Activate."
(NOT "select the Activate checkbox" or "check the Activate box" or any other variation.)
Then there are radio boxes.
They are "radio buttons", and that term should be avoided if possible in these user guides. It's an unnecessary bit of computer jargon. Just say "select <label>". For example:
"To set OOo to automatically update links when you open a document, go to the Tools > Options > Text Document > General dialog. In the Update section, under Update links when loading, select Always."
(NOT "select the Always radio button" or "select the radio button labelled Always".)
