Linda suggested that the search and external links don't belong on the
front page. To help people compare, I have two pages:
http://new.scipy.org:9080/oocommunity/front.html
http://new.scipy.org:9080/oocommunity/front2.html
The first one has a search box and links on the left. The second has
no search box and links at the bottom. And you can easily imagine what
it'd look without any links.
What do you prefer?
Of these two, front2... but I would prefer no links.
Should I remove the bottom links too?
IMO, yes. (See our previous correspondence about the purpose of the page.)
But some people feel that the page looks empty.
It does a bit, but (a) I'm not sure that matters, and (b) if it does
matter, I'm sure we can find some other way to make it look less
empty... at the moment I have no suggestions as to what that other way
might be.

The page loads fast, offers direction, (Only that with IE 6 there is
some sort of error message)
Maybe a clean page is something different from all those cluttered,
difficult to "eye on" commercial pages.
Sometimes the small package has the best gift.
The empty page that I am looking at has about 13 different links and
looks clean.
