My name is Tara and I hope to be working with you all on OpenOffice
documentation.
Hi Tara! Nice to meet you. I'm Daniel.
A little about myself: I have a MA in history and a
MLS (yes, I'm a librarian!).
Cool. What's MLS?
I currently work for a natural history
museum as their only IT person.
One of these days I'll ask you what natural history is... :-)
I created and currently manage the
museum's website, administer the various museum servers, perform
database development for the museum's collections, and support about
40 users with varying levels of computer skill. With so much variety
in my job, it's hard to get bored.
Cool. Can I see the website?
A little about myself too: I'm Daniel. I'm a mathematecian by
education, but I'm not doing math right now. I became interested in open
source and now work for a company that focuses on open source and
education. I've taught math for 7 years. That's where I became
interested in education I guess. I work with Ian Lynch, the lead of the
OOo for schools project. One of my main jobs is maintaining the website
of his INGOTs initiative. It's a series of certifications for computer
skills for kids in elementary school through highschool. What I like
about it is that it teaches kids about open source, open standards,
compatibility, etc. For example, on the silver INGOT they have to burn a
CD of a useful program and give it to someone, and they have to show
that what they are doing is legal. It's neat.
This is the website: http://www.theINGOTs.org
So you see where I'm comming from. I approach OOoAuthors largely from an
educator's point of view.
I *think* I need to request an "author role" to get started. My user
name is trhess.
Yes, indeed. I see that Sigrid has already given you the author role and
basic instructions. So I'm really just writing to say "hi" and welcome
you to the group. It's good to have you here. This is a great group,
you'll love it here.
Now let's seee... to get you started it's probably a good idea to review
a chapter. This is a nice, short-term, not-too-hard project. And it's a
good way to familiarize yourself with the project.
Next time you login you'll see a "review list" on the left side of the
page (scroll down, it's below the navigation box). Pick any chapter that
sounds interesting and download it.
When you pick a chapter to review, you should:
1) Write to the list to let us know what you are reviewing.
2) "retract" the chapter, so it comes out of the review list:
http://oooauthors.org/en/authors/userguide2/resources/howto_retract
Review the chapter. You know, see if it makes sense. The most important
thing to check for is that the instructions are clear. If at any point
you don't understand an explanation, that's a "bug" and we want to fix
it. Leave a note saying so: Insert > Note
If you can think of a better way to say something, please type it in.
You should use the "record changes" feature. It's really cool:
Edit > Changes > Record
This way the reviewer will know exactly what you changed.
A good place to learn how to do things on the website is our resources
section:
http://oooauthors.org/en/authors/userguide2/resources/
If you have questions (and you likely will :) please don't hesitate to
ask. We want your experience here to be positive and enjoyable.
When you're done reviewing your first chapter, give a shout. I'll show
you where to put it, and how.
Looking forward to working with you!
Me too! Once again, welcome aboard!
Cheers,
Daniel.
