GMANE

There is a fairly straightforward form to fill in: http://gmane.org/subscribe.php

Please note that you may specify Posting Permissions (the list may be restricted to list members only - I don't see a need for this.

Jean,

It seems that UseNet newsgroups can be either moderated or unmoderated. In the former case, any posting is first presented to a group of moderators. It is their job to ensure that any posting is consistent with the newsgroup's Charter (a statement of purpose). If a posting is acceptable, it is circulated to the world. If not, it is returned to the sender with an explanation of the reason for rejection.

The majority of newsgroups are unmoderated. Concern has been expressed that moderation is a form of censorship.

As far as I can see there is no mechanism to restrict postings to members. The same would appear to be true for gmane.

Hi Colin,

Maybe you can fill in a few gaps in my ignorance.

I don't know anything about how a newsgroup copies or mirrors a mailing list. Does a post to either of them turn up in both places?

For UseNet, I suggest that you consult your local Linux wizard - I don't know. For gmane, it seems that the post does turn up in both places

If so, I think that if we set up a newsgroup, we definitely *do* want to restrict posting permissions to list members only, just as is the case with the Authors list at the moment.

You already have a mechanism to restrict list postings to members. For gmane, there is no mechanism to prevent spurious postings going to the newsgroup but your existing mechanism would presumably prevent spurious postings going to the mailing list.

I hope that this is of some help.

Best wishes,

Colin W.
