Hi Gary,
What kind of document are you hoping to write? Would this be a chapter
in the OOo Database Guide? It sounds like you want it to be as generic
as possible. Would there be parts that are specific to OOo? What
aspect would make your document unique?
I was originally thinking it would be a generic introduction of sorts. I
think it is important to know up front not only the capabilities, but
also the obstacles. Databases can be quite daunting for the uninitiated.
It might be a good idea to make it a chapter or sub-chapter though. The
theory covers quite a bit ground so I wanted to limit the discussion to
data normalization and relationships. It would seem to fit well with the
table design chapter.
I saw the data model in the Base section of the website, but haven't
gone over it in any detail yet. It appears quite old (Jan, 2005). Is
anyone currently working on the Base documentation?
how would this reconcile with the PDL?
This very much depends on the source of the material and how it is
licensed.
I will try to keep it relevant to OOo. I can point people to the
Wikipedia site, as Colin suggested (I don't think I could go beyond
that), and concentrate on showing how to apply it in OOo.
Thanks for the suggestions.
