I've been playing with Scott's script a little bit. It works
pretty nicely! I find that the FAQs at OOoAuthors do not
receive updates very often. All FAQs in the
OOoAuthors/en/FAQs directory are in the published state. All
changes to published files at OOoAuthors show here:
http://oooauthors.org/recently_published
When we see changes there, we can run the faq_spider script,
then upload its output to the OOo site (until the script is
automated). The output file is posted here:
http://user-faq.openoffice.org/new-faq/
(Am I right to assume this is the final home for them? If
not, I'm ready to work toward the final result, whatever it is.)
I've been calling this set of FAQs the FAQ Collaboration,
because so many folks have worked so hard to "make this
dream come true".
I also created a set of instructions for running the script,
as needed from my machine, anyway. I am a novice at this.

Things are not setup automatically at the moment. I
am waiting for full transition of UserFAQ to the
script, before setting things up to run Auto.
I update the User-FAQ project pages. There are notes about
that recorded here:
http://user-faq.openoffice.org/servlets/ReadMsg?list=dev&msgNo=291
(Any and all feedback is welcome and appreciated.)
I have been thinking about how to update the FAQ index at
the documentation project, but so far have not performed any
actions in that regard... I'm still thinking about the "how"
part...
I notice we are still quite attached to the older sets... I
also know there are a few questions in each of the older
sets that I'd like to see migrate to the new-faq set. This
is the mission I was working on, but perhaps was too slow,
before this faq_spider was available. I have also been
thinking about how I might cross-reference all sets, to help
us see what has been used and what has been omitted.
What are other's views about how things should move fwd from
here? Do others have visions of the end result?
Hi Scott, I'm very sorry that I have been very
unresponsive on this topic. Is it too late for me to
come back to this topic and complete it with you ?
It's never too late, man. If you look under the new_faq
folder in CVS, you will find the faq_spider.pl file.
This has all the code that I am using for the spider of
Authors. It should work from any computer.
This was a motivational statement for me, so I gave it a
whirl. Curiosity, I guess. I've learned that Perl is pretty
important (and powerful as a tool) in the web world, so it
was a valuable exercise in spawning my own growth. I run RH9
Linux. I had to fetch and install one Perl module to enable
my pc to run the script. I recorded notes about it, and
posted them here:
http://user-faq.openoffice.org/new-faq/http_lite_install_readme.txt
I guess my mind is a little stuck on how to pull everything
together now. I think we want to work toward one set, but in
watching others, I wonder if I am off base. It would be
super useful to read what others envision as steps to
complete this task. I will likely putter at tying up loose
ends, if I can. I, too, would like to see this as a mission
accomplished, which is what continues to pull me to the work.
One step I see that we could better iron out is the download
of the complete set. The script that drives the download tab
is a little buggy. Should we work together to debug that
now? Or should we create a set of steps to help the non-CVS
savvy download a set using the spider script? I'm thinking
it might be good to help make a download link available
somehow from the html pages near the new-faq set. These are
some questions that remain in my own mind, and again, it
would be helpful to learn others' ideas.
Another thought that has come to mind is how do we best
accommodate the N-L FAQ sets... does that happen at the
individual N-L projects, or do we group the FAQ sets at the
User-FAQ project, or the documentation project or.... What
do other's think?
Best Wishes,
Diane Mackay
