I need some clarification on this point. It refers to the task
pane and slide pane. When in Impress, the View menu lists them as
Task Pane and Slide Pane. The main window of the presentation has the
headings: Slide, and Task.
For consistency, should any mention of these two panes be with both
words capitalized since the View menu does?
Apologies on taking so long to get back to you. I wanted to check some
references and some of the other chapters before I commented. I admit
that I was also hoping that Janet would say something first.
I think the word "pane" in narrative should *not* be capitalised,
regardless of how the View menu lists them. The items in the menu
bar's submenus use initial caps for all the words, but that does not
mean those terms should be capitalised in the text, except when
referring to the menu items themselves, as in View > Task Pane.
Our general style (probably undocumented; I haven't checked) is to not
capitalise the words "menu" and "toolbar" in the text. So not
capitalising "pane" would be consistent with this style. Yes, I know
the various chapters are a bit inconsistent in this usage.
I agree, based on my gut more than any reference. I would go for
consistency with the window headings, rather than the menu labels, which
tend to capitalize everything. _Read Me First_ does not specifically
address this issue, but it has examples that are consistent with this
recommendation. My rationalization is that "Task" is the name of the
thing, and "pane" is just the type of thing it is; therefore "Task pane"
is the appropriate capitalization.
