I have noticed some questions in the [email protected] mailing list about the use of master slides (aka master pages or slide masters). Since these serve basically the same purpose as page styles in Writer, I feel they should have a prominent place in the Impress Guide. I am thinking that chapter 1 might be a good place. The location within this chapter might be the first topic in the Formating a presentation section. An introduction to master slides would come first. Then all of the style modifications should probably be spread throughout the rest of this section. For example, the Title style could be mentioned when the Title page construction is explained. Various levels of outlining could be mentioned where slides with text are explained. I am thinking strongly of writing Chapter 1 for the Impress Guide, but I need this clarification first.
I think Chapter 1 is not the place for this, other than a note with a reference to a chapter in the book (probably "Formatting Slides") where it is covered in more detail.
The first chapter of each of the other books (Calc, Writer, Draw) is a general introduction to the module, not much different from the "Getting Started with..." chapter in the GS book, or even a subset of that chapter. I think the Impress Guide should follow the same model.
In fact, I think the "Getting Started with Impress" chapter that Dan wrote and I just published could be retitled "Introducing Impress" and serve nicely as Chapter 1 of the Impress Guide, with appropriate minor modifications to refer to specific chapters in the book instead of the generic "see the Impress Guide" references that are there now.
I have just looked at the existing outline for the book, and think it needs to be revised or at least reconsidered. For example, "Formatting Slides" might be better as chapter 2, before the chapter on "Adding Text to Slides".
