I've been considering setting up our template as a real template. We didn't, originally, because so many people at the time didn't know how to use it properly. It's may be time for a change, though I'm not convinced of it.

I recall that one of the reasons we didn't use a real template was that document properties didn't work right -- property values set in the template did not show up in documents created from the template. I haven't checked to see if this problem has been fixed.

I believe that problem has been fixed. However, when I started creating full books using master docs, I found that those fields apply only within an individual document and do not work when the doc is part of a master document. Anything in the chapters that depends on the contents of one of those fields (such as the chapter title and subtitle) does not display in the master doc. So I had to change the chapter files to not use those fields to fill in info in the doc itself, and thus they are effectively no longer needed. For this reason, I am planning to remove the requirement to fill them in.
