Everything appears OK until the first time the TOC is updated. Then it's poof! Going back into the Outline dialog box, you'll see that the top three or four elements (always?) were deleted after a styles import.

Perhaps, some posters might share their experiences with this behavior before our writing something which may be incomplete or inconclusive. This has been around for as long as I used it (meaning: at least as far back as last March).

I'm quite used to this because we have different styles (but the same names!) for the German documentation. So every time I take an English documentation (in order to translate it) and overwrite the styles with ours, the effect of what you call "poof" ;), is happening. In the meantime I already "repair" this in the outline dialog box before even updating the TOC for the first time ;)

I don't know whether this is a bug or a feature. I used to see it as a feature because loading other styles might implicate that the user wants to have other chapter names in the TOC than before. But, on the other hand, like in my example above, I overwrite the styles with ones that have exactly the same names. So a defining of new outline styles wouldn't be necessary at all in the first place.

Wolfgang
