Hi All:

I'm moving an existing doc set into a Word (2003) template that I created.
My list styles use a Word list template. I have the first level set up as
a List Intro that causes the following list to restart at 1 when I press
ENTER (Level 2). Level 3 uses a,b,c and Level 4 uses i,ii,iii. It all
works beautifully until I throw bullets into the mix, which mess up both
the indents and numbering restarts.

Let's say I'm writing installation steps. Step 5 branches so that you have
two options. Each of those options then has 2 or 3 steps. What I want is:

5. At the prompt blah blah, do one of the following:
   * If you want to install the database on this machine:
       a. Blah blah
       b. Blah blah
   * If you want to install the database on a different machine:
       a. Blah blah
       b. Blah blah
       c. Blah blah
6. Yada yada

What I end up with is:

5. At the prompt blah blah, do one of the following:
   * If you want to install the database on this machine:
       i. Blah blah
       ii. Blah blah
   * If you want to install the database on a different machine:
       iii. Blah blah
       iv. Blah blah
       v. Blah blah
6. Yada yada

Because the a, b, c level (Level 3) is at the the same indentation as the
bullets, I have to resort to using i,ii,iii (Level 4), which is not the
end of the world. The larger problem is that I can't restart Level 4
without a previous Level 3 step, and I don't have one. Is there a way to
do this without manually restarting iii?

Conceptually, it seems to me that the problem is having all the lists tied
together. In FM or QuickSilver I would have separate lists for a,b,c and
i,ii,iii.

Any ideas?

Thank you in advance for any help!

Hello Gary,

I haven't got Word at hand at present (I have it in the office) so I do not
understand what an entry list is.
Ignoring this, it seems to me that in OOo it is very straightforward to
solve Lynn's problem as it is very simple to mix and match bullets and
numbering in a nested lists. Maybe you should suggest Lynn to get OOo ;-)

Cheers,

Michele

(1)

Hi Lynn,

This situation is what SEQ fields were born for. They're terrific for
parallel numbering systems -- 1(a)(iii), etc. The bulleted lists don't
require the fields, just a dedicated style.

David Brown has posted some SEQ field basics at
<http://www.techwr-l.com/archives/0410/techwhirl-0410-00198.html>.
David's Autotext suggestion is also a big timesaver: "Just four autotext
entries and two paragraph styles, and you're set."

Dedicated styles are very important in your case, in order to avoid the
default list templates.

David Knopf's instructions at
<http://www.knopf.com/tips/autonumber.html> are also very helpful --
just bear in mind that they continue into RoboHelp, which you don't
need.

(2) Hi Lynn,

When I use this method, I type 1] for a first list item or ]] for a
subsequent list item, and the autotext inserts the correct field.
Periods, tabs, and other accoutrements are included in the autotext, so
I don't type them.

Thanks,

Dan
