Writer Guide Chapter 6 (Jan 11)

Cheers Gary,

Had a quick look (using the compare documents feature) and I am amazed
how much you improved the text, thanks!
I have taken all the screenshots (PHB compliant) and will add them
when I upload (some time in the coming week).
Question: there is some text in red used for very strong emphasis:
should there be a character style for it?
Question: should I move the figures around when their position leaves
large blank areas at the bottom of the page, or would someone more
experienced take care of this? (actually if we agree to change the
font size of the textbody it makes sense to wait as all the work will
need to be done again.

I got to prepare a better template. The Note, Tip, and Caution tables in
the template should be set so that those short tables do not break
across pages (only happened very rarely in the past anyway). Those in
this chapter were set for nonbreaking. Also changed the text body style
so that 2/2 widow/orphan control is set instead of entire paragraphs.
This might cut down the page count a bit.

I was actually going to suggest the change to the table. However,
should we follow the same rule for longer tables? there is one (maybe
in chapter 7) which occupies half a page and makes pagination a bit
ugly. What about putting also tables in frames? And furthermore: is
there a style for table captions?
How does anybody feel about changing the main text body font size to
11.5 or 11pt in the future? 12pt TNR is generally larger than used in
many documents. No change in font size was made for this chapter. In any
event, this and any other style changes can be easily effected or
reverted back...

I agree with Peter's comment: I also think size 11 looks good.
However, I like the current size of the headings.

Cheers,

Michele
The newer version of the template will contain some red-based style(s) for such entries. Also, the text body font sizes will be reduced to 11pt, starting in the v.2.3 for Chapter 7. We'll see how that appears. The 12pt TNR was a bit too large, considering that many textbooks typically have font sizes from 8pt to 10.5pt or so.

I don't mind having tables break across pages, but not baby "tables" like the Note, Tip, and Caution tables. It's just ugly when that occasionally happens. I had changed all of them in the past several chapters of the /Draw /and /Writer Guides/ I encountered.

Another consideration might involve the font family used for the subheads because a number of brand-new fonts have replaced (or are doing so) the older fonts used in Windows, etc. For instance, the lower-case "l" in the sans serif subheads are not well represented, etc.
