When I was exploring this option, I could not work out how to make dpkg -i install to anything but the /usr/local or /usr directory. What if you want to install both the standard Ubuntu and the test Ooo? I ended up setting up a chroot with debbootstrap and installing there. *Can* you tell dpkg -i to install in a different directory? I could not find out from reading the man page.
