Second part of question (which I forgot to ask in my earlier note):

answer is no.
Dan, *my* Linux installation gives the choice of using the OOo-supplied
dialogs or the standard Linux (Ubuntu, in my case) ones. So if the Mac
version has the same choices, then the answer to my question is "Yes".
Would you be a little more specific in where this is located. I am running
OOo RC1 on an amd64 using Ubuntu. I have no idea where these dialog boxes
are, so I still can not give you a correct "yes" or "no".
Tools > Options > OpenOffice.org > General. Near the middle of the page
is a section labelled Open/Save dialogs, with a checkbox for Use
OpenOffice.org dialogs.
Sak answered my question about the Mac, so it's no longer urgent.
I don't know just when this choice was added for Linux and Mac
installations, but I suspect it was some time ago, as I've been using it
for a long time on Linux but obviously never changed Chapter 1 of the
OOo2.x Getting Started guide to remove the reference to "If you are
using Windows..."
