Hi Janet, *, maybe it's time to upgrade the Plone instance to a newer version (to 2.5 or better 3.x -buildout technology.). There are products available for newer versions of Plone that could help to prevent spam on the site. The newer versions are also more comfortable to manage.
Marko and myself could set up a test instance with buildout technology and migrate the content to the new instance.
