I have written several business applications and never realized how important the help files were until I started to get more questions about my help than my program. I then sat down and did a proper job of it. To say the least it was an eye opener for sure.
I've used OO since v2.4 and would like to help out if I may.

Welcome! The actual Help files (that ship with the program) are not done by OOoAuthors, but if you're interested in working on user guides, FAQs, or how-to's (single-topic articles), you've come to the right place.

To begin, do you prefer to work in Writer (producing .odt files) or on the wiki? The user guides have traditionally been produced as .odt files and then copied to the wiki, but one can also work the other way around. The wiki also has additional material, including how-to's, FAQs, and tutorials.

If you prefer to work in Writer, you need to sign up at the OOoAuthors website, if you haven't already done that. It's a separate signup, in addition to this list and the main OOo website. Then let us know your login ID and we'll grant you author privileges (this allows download of working -- unpublished -- files and upload of files).

If you prefer to work on the wiki, that's a different login. http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/

Do you have a particular area of knowledge or interest? Spreadsheets, for example?

Most newcomers start by reviewing draft chapters, but you are also welcome to plunge directly into writing a chapter after discussing it with us on this list.
