After installing the free version, it appears, when using the DocBook
example they provided, that it works OK. At least, in the few minutes
that I played with it, it seems to works like the other open-sourced or
freeware/shareware versions I used the past three years.
I do not know what DocBook version it used for its example, but most
likely it would have to be either version 4.5 or, better yet, version 5.0.
Will get back to it after I get some work done here. Perhaps, various
schema were preloaded with its initial installation and current DocBook
versions may not have to be installed unless a newer version becomes
available.
DITA would require some learning for most, though. Having it available
is nice.

I haven't been following that discussion, so I'm utterly lacking the
context. However, I can address one specific point.
The makers of the Serna WYSIWYG XML editor have recently open-sourced
the free version of their tool.

They tout support for DITA and DocBook only for their Enterprise
(non-open) Edition. However, it looks like that just means that the
DITA and DocBook open-source tools and stylesheets are packaged with
the Enterprise Edition, whereas you would have to supply them yourself
to use them with the free edition; the editor can use any XML schema.
The EE also has some extra support for working with DITA references.
