A newcomer to the group wrote to me offlist, but I'm answering here because I'm sure others want to know too. Most of the answers are on the website, but as Emma said, you have to dig for them (and when the site's not working, even a link won't help).

Which document would I look at to make changes?

The first place to find documents to review is on the Review List, which appears (after you log in) at the bottom of the left-hand navigation area. Unfortunately we haven't figured out how to keep each language's docs only in that language's section of the site, so you have to wade through a lot of other language's docs to find the ones in English.

Once you've picked a doc, just click the link to go to a page where you can download it and "retract" it. (At that point you can see what folder you're in. If you wish, you can go up a level to the folder, pick the Contents tab, and look in the State column to see what chapters in that book are pending review.)

At this point a lot of chapters that need reviewing for OOoV3.2 are not on the Review List. I've been considering what's the best way to handle those chapters, and I will write a separate note on this subject.

Where would I upload the modified document?

Upload modified docs to the Feedback folder for the relevant book (WG, CG, GS, etc).

Do I make the physical changes to the document, or do I merely make comments about needed changes?

Both. Use change tracking if you make changes directly. If you don't want to change the doc directly, or you spot a problem but don't know how to fix it, then use comments. If you find only a few things to change, or you think something needs discussing, you can even send me (or the list) an email about the changes or questions.

How do I know who is working on what?

A file in the "Internal draft" state shows a "last changed by" name on its page. This is usually the person who is working on it, but at the moment a lot of files show either Andreas' or my name left over from when the site was migrated to a new Plone instance earlier this year.

If I decide to update a chapter, how so I know someone else isn't already working on it?

If it's in the "pending review" state, then no one else is working on it (unless they forgot to retract it).

If two people are working on the same chapter, who is responsible for merging the changes?

People used to act as "maintainers" of specific chapters (and be listed in the chapters), and one of their duties was to incorporate (or reject) changes suggested by reviewers. Most of the maintainers are no longer on the team, so in practice I'm usually the person who does that. People are encouraged to take on the role of maintainer for any chapter that particularly interests them, either temporarily or long-term.
