the user specify all of these macros is a disadvantage, no?  There are
lots of macro dependencies we (consciously) chose not to document, and
while maybe not for this specific one, I also don't see a compelling

at all.

But also, why do we want to document this at all? It's not that having reason to do otherwise here; but I certainly don't have a strong opinion

Because you can be surprised to see:

checking build system type... i386-apple-darwin8.10.1
checking host system type... i386-apple-darwin8.10.1
checking build system type... (cached) i386-apple-darwin8.10.1
