A good rule of thumb is: if the maintainer doesn't fix bugs in the software any more, it's too old. So, for example, in March 2012 Oracle stopped fixing bugs in Solaris 8, which means Solaris 8 is now too old. Solaris 9 is scheduled to become too old in October 2014, and so forth.
