Hi Suresh. I think this is how it works: NIS comes in (normally) through
a file called nsswitch.conf, which on linux resides in /etc. It specifies
where files should be looked for. It will say, for example

automount: nis files

The client first asks its NIS server (result of `ypwhich`) for auto.master
(and then, theoretically, looks locally (the "files" entry) for things
that it needs but doesn't find on the NIS server--here it should be
possible to have a local auto.* file so your users can mount the cdrom; it
doesn't work this way (in my limited experience) in practice however). The
map squirts from the server to the client and the client sees that it also
needs auto.home, which it requests, and so on.
