Ad hock, perhaps, but I think it goes back farther than simply
performance optimization. We run in a mixed shop, and even now
some of the "older" systems employ methods where the difference
between the volume and its sub-dirs is exposed.
The result is that our maps contain a lot of this kind of syntax.

autofs-4.0.0pre6-52 works, autofs-4.0.0pre7-86 doesn't.
