The hooks in particular are called "dentry traps." The availability of
dentry traps makes it possible to do autofs in a completely different
way, which solves a lot of the problems in autofs v4 with the features
autofs v3 simply could not support.
Viro is working on them -- but so he is on a gajillion other things. I
have been working with him on one other major project -- initramfs -- as
well, and there are other things he's got in flight, too.
