I have done some work on autofs4. You can get an idea of what I have done at 
http://wombat.indigo.net.au/autofs/.

I am soon to return to it to complete what I set out to do.

In particular, still to be done is:

1) Implement a HUP signal to reread maps (yp and file) for those that use the the 
mapentry cache.

2) Fix symlink maps so they work (I hope).

3) Migrate my changes to the 2.4 kernel module to the 2.2 kernel.

This is about as far as I am going with this as it satisfys the functionality I need 
at work.

I will of course try to fix bugs when they are found.
