if that were to also indicate that the web server/beans server/mail client could be used as components within the newbies app then the system capabilities would be well spelt out.

Looks good to me. There should be an indication of where the newbies own applications fit in to this, perhaps on the top line next to the web server/beans server/mail client. I know I'd had a cursory read of Avalon docs a number of times before I realised it was something I could use, the diagram would have told me very quickly.
Good idea. Perhaps something like the following?
