Oh, and in addition to my previous reply - it's reproduceable :-)  I've managed
to get hold of an older package (0.53.5 again) and downgrading got all the
speed back.  Upgrading again gives the speed loss, and so on.  Both built from
source on the same machine with the same compiler.
