Some more hints:

I have a look at the lame3.70 dir.  My first impression:
it is impossible to have more than one MP3 stream encoded at the same 
time, because they make heavy use of (not-so-)good-old-C "static" vars; 
and it seems that everything only does, if there is exactly one stream.

Any opinions?

Any workarounds?
