gcc-3.0.1 is also available for Mandrake (package gcc3.0).
Better option is to install it along gcc-2.96, and use
--with-gcc=gcc-3.0.1flag with configure script.
I also maintain an avifile rpm for Mandrake, at URL
http://bohm.snv.jussieu.fr/plf. Currently, it is a CVS snapshot from
beginning of the month. It's build with default gcc, and i get no real
problem with it.
