I'm just reposting this part to avi mailing list.
(as I know some mplayer developers seems to read this list :)

I know they have nice font renderer - and I've discused this with
main mplayer developer and asked them if they could create a simple
library from this.  But it looks they are hunting CPU cycles so intesively
that they believe that drawing 1000 images per 1.5 hour is such a thing 
which has to be optimalized soo much that they are not interested in 
making it as a portable library as they would obviosly loose several 
miliseconds.

So either someone else would have to do that or you will simply
have to wait until I'll come with something like that.
For now it doesn't have such high prioprity - maybe
I'll just put something from SDL for blended TTF rendering as
could be found in apla - some NetBSD player.
