It's the linking issue
4.0 contained dynamicaly loadable libraries for DGA, VM and others
but for 4.1 they have considered dynamic-linking is a bad thing and users
are supposed to link libraries staticaly (due to change in API of these
libraries)
We have been respecting what sdl-config told us - but this correct
sdl-config is not present on many distribution as I could see
